Celebrate the 30th anniversary of Rent, the groundbreaking musical that changed the Broadway landscape! Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City’s East Village, Rent tells the story of a group of young artists navigating love, friendship, and the challenges of life, including poverty, illness, and identity. Please be prepared to:
– Prepare a 30 to 60 second cut from a rock musical in the style of RENT. You may sing a song from the show if you would like. Please be aware that you will be cut off after one minute. Please select a cut that shows off a wide vocal range and strong storytelling ability. You must sing with our provided accompaniment (provide your own clearly marked sheet music) or with a device you provide. No a cappella auditions will be heard.- You may be asked to sing scales by our accompanist.
– Complete a dance audition, taught by the show choreographer (dress appropriately – there will be time to change between the vocal and dance portion of the auditions if needed)
– Read provided selections from the script
– Be prepared to fill out a conflict sheet at auditions (be as specific as possible about conflicts throughout the rehearsal period)
*A virtual audition option is available for those who may be out of the area at the time of auditions. Additional audition times may be scheduled ONLY if you are unable to attend the scheduled auditions. Rehearsals will begin the week of DATE TBD. Tech week will be from Saturday, April 18 through Thursday, April 23, 2025. No absences will be accepted during tech week or performances.

Please make sure you can fully commit to the rehearsal period and performance schedule before auditioning. You must be willing to make the show a priority.
Compensation
*Please note that productions are non-equity and no housing is provided or available.*
Compensation for this production will be 2 comp tickets per performer.
Performers Needed
Due to the adult nature of RENT, all actors but be 18 years of age or older to audition. Experienced or first-time performers who enjoy singing, dancing, and acting are invited to audition. Unless strictly and specifically mandated from the playwright, all roles are open and available to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, or body type.
Roles Available:
Roger Davis
A struggling musician and former drug addict. He is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft and battles with being HIV positive.

Filmmaker and video artist. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, Mark is the typical young artist. He and Roger are roommates in the loft. A bit of a nerd.

A computer genius and liberal professor. He is a nurturer with a smooth and relaxed disposition. Used to be a roommate in the loft and is HIV positive.

The landlord of Mark and Roger’s apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth.

Joanne Jefferson
A public interest lawyer and headstrong lesbian. She is smart and purposeful in all her decisions. Carries on a tumultuous relationship with Maureen.

Angel Dumott Schunard
The eccentric HIV positive street drummer. A drag queen with an incredible gift of dance and a magnetic personality. He becomes Tom’s lover.

An HIV positive exotic dancer with drug addictions. Slender and sickly, she conceals it all at her job in the local club. She lives in the same building as the loft.

An unpredictably zany performance artist. Maureen oozes sexuality and used to live in the loft. She has recently dumped Mark for Joanne.
